Body and architecture, body and nature

December 22, 2010

Vitruvius in the classical work of classical architecture show how the house maps onto the body. But he does not undertake to then show how the body is mapped onto nature. The view that humans were created by a human like agent (god) and palced in nature makes such a “reduction” or setting unnecessary. But for us who have a sense that the body itself eerges out of nature and its processes and changes, not from an idea in the mind of god, knowing how the body maps (food, water, warmth, etc.) would be helpful, especially when we get to questions of aesthetics, relationships and their relation to seasons and diurnal and climatic changes.
